i often think with SBR that people underestimate the impact Marcos Amrbose had on the team... We all know theyre clever blokes and they prepared alot of good race cars... But before Marcos showed up they were Struggling with Bairdo, and once he left they could only keep it up for another 12months..
People forget how good he was, old Marcos... pole in his first ever outing in a V8 is the first thing that springs to mind.. Keeping pressure on gonzo even when that AU was struggling BIG TIME..
For me, even though he only got two titles and never won Bathurst... Ambrose is a great of the sport...
not this black duck: When Brighty left SBR, it left 'em in a quandary. A mate of mine used to walk the dog of a bloke who lived next door to the maiden aunt of a bloke who worked three doors up from SBR, who reckoned that they had already passed on Baird on the grounds that he was too slow, but couldn't get anyone else for the seat. For Ambrose to do what he did, when he did it, and with what he did it with... and if you revisit some of the print interviews and read his comments on what they were doing about the AU, the plans for the BA, etc etc...
Not to say he's perfect. Here, he was prone to psyching himself out ("there's a vibration"... "there's a flat"...) and his final season could've easily been his third successive title, but for a bit of division in his focus... but when there was a fight to be fought, he's start doing the sorts of things Moffat did when he got riled, or Alan Jones... the gaze would get steely, and all of a sudden the opposition would have real trouble dealing with him. He was a genius for creating overtaking opportunities where most people considered none available (scything through the pack at one of the GP meets by simply passing them through the left-right switchback down the back, where all the "legends" would be single-file, for instance)
What he did extraordinarily well here, and seems to be doing in the States, is galvanise the team into action around him; whether it's because he leads by example, or because he knows how to massage the best from the people around him is a moot point... it simply seems to happen. Like Mitch says, SBR weren't doing anything special when he arrived there... but then he sticks it on pole first time out... and then takes a new car to two straight titles, and whilhe he missed out in 2005, Phillip Island that year was as imperious a demonstration of Who's The Boss as I've seen.

Im confident that JC will do a job for us... and Jnr will be a perfect partner for him, should he stick around. Probably the best in the pack at keeping a straight car..
bring on 09! more coin, 888 chassis, and one of the fastest, most gifted racers in the field.. (f#@k davison)
Disappointed to see Will go... but it's a plum ride he's getting. JC needs to coalesce his talent and potential into tangible results, and Junior needs to add aggressive racing to his silky wheelmanship and uncanny knack for bringing them home straight.
