I have been advised that it's basicly ok to use ethanol as far as engines are concerned , they will basicly burn anything with the right tuning.

Also , be prepared to replace Cat, mufflers and exhaust componentry , these items will not show up in data on economy, if you run stainless systems you should , once again be ok.

Hoonstoppers : the thing about ethanol that makes it so environmentaly friendly is the emissions it produces. There are some gasses but the main emission is water, in quite large quantities. After driving with an ethanol aditive in your fuel there could potentially be enough water in the exhaust system to combine with oxides that already exist there to form acids and corrosive alkalies , not to mention rust. water also adds to the "clogging" effect of built up substances in the cat.

My Mercedes already meets stringent EU 4 emissions standard when the cat is hot and working. There should be a low level of CO, NOx emission and it doesn't require ethanol to do cut down on harmful emissions.

My wife has the 2.5 lt , and we live on acreidge south of Brisbane about 40 K's from where she works. there are only two sets of traffic lights on her trip and the rest of it she can cruise on 80, and 100 on the highway, the 8.5 came from the display on her dash. she user unleaded only.
My Mercedes averaged something like 10.0 litres/100km on premium unleaded and that's from the trip computer. I have recorded as low as 5.5 litres/100km sitting at 70km/h.
