The XR6 may have the sporty looks and extra torque form it's six cylinder engines which is good for towing things around but big aussie cars are no longer so popular as they used to be. Reason? Well high petrol prices means people are looking for smaller more economical cars and the A Class might be more economical than a Falcon. The latest BF can use only about 8 litre/100 on the highway thanks to it's new six speed auto but on the city? that's when the A Class shines. And the A CLass wears that famous 3 pointed star which I think stands for tonnes of prestige. Can't say the same thing with a XR6 badge!

True, but for mine, if I wanted something small and economical, I'd buy something like the Fiesta or the Focus, and pocket the difference....

And prestige counts for very little at the Henry House - if it don't perform to expectation, it's not worth the money... and if I can get something nice to do the same job for 20K, I'm sure as sh!t not going to pay an extra 20K to have a lairy badge on it...

The A Class is all about one really big thing...SAFETY. It's engine will collapse under the floor in a frontal collision instead of penatrating into the passenger compartment and would a Fiesta or a Focus do that? I don't think so. If you want safety features similar to the Mercedes you have to fork out more cash to buy a Holden Commodore Acclaim or a Falcon Futura than a cooking model aussie family six.

The thing about going for small and economical cars is what you give up to get that economy , most of the figures are done on flat gorund with the windows closed and the air definately off, somthing which most Aussie's aren't prepared to do.

I bought my wife a new car for her Birthday , the year before last and I searched high and low, Saab , audi , bmw , Benz , and all the popular small and mid size cars available and after driving them and doing the sums on price ,running cost and adding in the fact that the girl doesn't like small cars very much anyway, I was left with bmw 318 . . too expensive , Saab . . . .turbo runs premium fuel and services are too costly ,M G sedan . . . . worries about it going down , later proved correct, and finally subaru Liberty.

Liberty offered a budget version with 2 lt a mid range with 2.5 and the gt with 2 lt turbo. The one thing that pushed me toward the Subaru was all wheel drive , the handling ,steering , and brakeing were amazing and a fuel use optimum of 8.5 lt per 100 kms. And the price was right , around 37k in the garage with a full tank and a years rego, and even though she had one of my fuel cards she still worries about fuel consumption , which is very low. After a few months I asked her to tell me outright if she liked or disliked the car , she says she loves it .

You can use regular unleaded in all the new Libertys but the GT. I think that 8.5litre/100km might be done on using premium fuels.

My wife has the 2.5 lt , and we live on acreidge south of Brisbane about 40 K's from where she works. there are only two sets of traffic lights on her trip and the rest of it she can cruise on 80, and 100 on the highway, the 8.5 came from the display on her dash. she user unleaded only.

Did you see the ACA or Today TOnite thing that Ian Luff did... got best mileage from E10, running against identical cars with Premium and std ULP... E10 did them by a good margin too...

Ian Luff is a advanced driving instructor. Why is he comparing cars and petrol with regards to fuel efficiency?

He didn't say what brand, except it was a 10% ethanol blend (I've used BP's E10 in my TX-3 and was happy with mileage etc). Luffy did it because he is a professional driver - he does all sorts of consulting outside his own driving schools, and was able to set up a fair and equivocal test.
