I thought the C Class is where all the dumbs one went

Are you talking about the old C Class or the new C Class bigcol?

New C Class has 21st century technology and styling.

Old C Class looks Ok but didn't had so many flashy technology and the C180 in particular was a bit slow. The C180 was powered by a 90KW 1.8 litre engine matched with a 4 or 5 speed automatic transmission.

I thought the engine wasn't too bad it's the mass that killed the performance. A Toyota Corrola has less powerful 85KW engine but goes faster because it had far less weight on board.

Not that long ago, if you wanted more power you had to drive a C220 which cost a extra $20,000. That's ****ing dear.

Imported european cars are highly priced here because of all the taxes involved, gotta support the local manufacturers you know.

I thought the new Volvo S40 is exactly this, over priced and under equipped. For $47,950 (not including any on road costs) you get some fruit like 5 speed auto, cruise control, climate control etc but what about stability control, trip computer, leather trim, leather steering wheel? These things are including in a Holden Calais!

However, I think this is the best Volvo to date with confident handling matched to a smooth 2.4 litre engine and powerful braking. I wouldn't be expecting this model selling like hot cakes. I guess people look at Volvo in Australia and think it has less prestige than the Germans so they won't buy one.

A few exception, Porsche knows that some people can't afford a $200,000 911, that is why they introduced a Boxster.

The Merc A Class cost no more than a expensive medium sized car from Japan.

But many cannot justify spending the money on an A Class when you can get a top-shelf mid-sizer from Japan... you can't tel me that the Merc's are that much better than anything else...

Well, the A Class may not look big but you'd be surpised how much room there is. There is enough power to cruise at the 110km/h speed limit all day without fuss (just don't assume that this is a sports car) . The car also is claimed to be as safe as a larger Mercedes. Speaking of safety you get Anti lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Programming (ESP) Brake Assist and front and side airbags. It is a sensible, affordable Mercedes passenger car all that for less than $45K. Now, that is not a lot of money for a Merc.

Having said that, the A Class isn't the best car produced by Merc it is a budjet Merc. So is it worth buying one??? Well it depends on what you like Japanese and European I guess and what you think is good value for money and whether you can tollerate the styling of the Merc.

Is the Merc that much of a better car? Hard to disagree with you Henry, to me the Japanese cars may be the winner. the Japanese may have the upper hand on build and finish quality, equipement levels, engine responsiveness, handling, performance etc but the A Class may also have a upper hand in other areas but in this case is hard to find unless you know the car very well.

It's clear that Mercedes has taken some short cuts in the A Class by providing a car that doesn't handle like the usual Mercedes and a car that doesn't come with the traditional high levels of standard equipement like air conditioning and cruise control and window bags as standard,

I believe Mercedes wouldn't try to make the car too crappy though, it is STILL a car to be considered by potential family car buyers in the $40K plus segment price range.

The pricing is probably the most contentious part of it... in the 40K+ range locally are a stack of good Japanese cars, and the ones which probably and arguably give the greatest value for money... the Big Aussies. For 40K, you've got yourself an XR6 with fruit, or starting to look at a mid-level Territory... XR6T isn't completely out of reach... and you've got yourself a reasonably well-assembled car to carry your family comfortably, with accessable servicing in just about every town and burgh in this wide brown land, which won't shake itself to pieces on National Highway 1 (or whatever passes for it), and will give good service for a good half-million kilometres if treated reasonably nicely... try THAT in an A-Class!
