At a guess I'd say that the outside input was gladly given.... for all his reputation as a prickly character at the track with a distrust of the motoring media, among many of his peers - and those who have known him personally for the longer period - he is quite a different person from the one the average race-fan used to see...
Kevin Bartlett told a Moffat story in his book "Big Rev Kev", about how they were in Macau (presumably for one race meet or another), and at a casino... Moffat hit KB for a loan early in the night. Kev, on a roll, waved Moff to a pile of his chips and told him to go for it. Some time later, AM walked up to KB with a grin and dropped a pile on him, saying as he left "Thanks mate, paid in full". When Sniffer found the opportunity to gather his chips, he found Moffat had not only repaid him in full, he had thrown in a generous gratuity for Kevin's trouble.
Another interesting note is that KB rated Moff a better racing driver than Brock.
