Soccer referee in Brazil beheaded by angry fans after stabbing player to death

A SOCCER referee in Brazil was beheaded by angry fans after he stabbed a player to death.

Police in northern Brazil say one man has been arrested after the incident in a local league match in the town of Pio XII.

Local reports said the referee, Octavio da Silva, stabbed Josenir dos Santos after the player became involved in a physical confrontation with sa Silva and then refused to leave the field.

Dos Santos died while being taken to hospital.

Outraged spectators reportedly stormed the field and stoned the referee before decapitating him and putting his head on a stake in the middle of the ground.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on July 2, while the investigation is continuing.

Almost 50,000 people were murdered in Brazil in 2010 and the country is under pressure to show it is a safe place to visit ahead of next year's World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.

Congratulations to Queensland. What a cracker of a game and deserving winners. NSW had enough ball to score at least 3 tries in the first half and Queensland dug deep to hold them out. 8 in a row is a magnificent achievement by an amazing football team. Chris McQueen is a star and Josh Dugan had a great game for the Blues. Next year......

Great series, never in doubt , as RJ said NSW should have done so much more with their opportunities, there halves were a big plus... for QLD.

Most games when QLD have a lead you always wait for the NSW fight back, but for some reason I didn't feel like the had the strike power to cause any problems in the second half, the only players to threaten were Dugan and Jennings.

Bring on next year, I think the blues will have the upper hand in 2014 with so many QLD players in their 30's and a few probably not going around again.

Fifita has a lot to answer for as had he not taken Slater in the air and given away the penalty they would have been a BIG threat. Hoffman also i suppose to.

Already playing the underdog card for next year.

We (Qld), have always been dealt that card for many many years, since the pre origin years prior to 1980. The sports writers quite often recognize how much better the NSW teams are on paper or on individual form and mostly go into the origin games as favourites.

One thing is always for sure with state of origin games, two of the best teams in the world and they both give it their all and then some more. They are always close regardless of the final score.

Congrats Qld, well played NSW, see you next year!
