Don't worry, all confirmed in the press this morning, [crackup] James Phelps again,
HOLDEN V8 Supercars legend Greg Murphy has been thrown a lifeline by former teammate Rick Kelly.
In a major boast for Murphy and the sport, the dual Bathurst winner is set to sign with Kelly Brothers Racing in a move that evokes memories of the famous Kmart racing team.
Kiwi icon Murphy teamed with Kelly to win Bathurst titles in 2003 and 2004 with the Kmart team.
The duo will return to the golden days next year with the talented veteran joining his former partner in a Pepsi-backed car.
"Our team is currently working to finalise everything for next year," Kelly said.
"I can't say anything more than that at this time."
Murphy was facing an early retirement from full-time driving until Kelly Brothers offered him a shock spot.
The 2010 Kelly Racing driver Jason Bargwana has shifted to Team BOC to stand in for Jason Richards while the Kiwi undergoes treatment for cancer, creating an opportunity for Murphy to continue his stellar career.
While no official announcement will be made until the end of next month because of commercial demands, The Sunday Mail can reveal Murphy will drive in the Kelly's third entry.
Murphy's switch to the Kelly stable will be the final piece of the V8 recruitment and retention jigsaw.
While Kelly would not confirm he had signed Murphy, the V8 ace was more than happy to give his former partner a glowing reference.
"Murph is a great guy," Kelly said. "There are very few guys in the category that I get along with really well but Murph is one of them.
"We hold our two Bathurst wins close to our heart and that is something very special we will always share.
"In 2006 when I won the championship, he was one of the first people that came into my trailer and gave me a hug. Those are the sorts of things you always remember."
In another signing coup, Dick Johnson Racing is set to sign James Moffat – son of V8 legend Allan – to replace the Holden Racing Team-bound James Courtney.
Rocked by the departure of the championship-winning driver, Johnson will look to the son of a gun to again take the fight to the factory-backed teams in 2011.
Courtney will replace Will Davison at HRT. Davison will bolster the Ford ranks with FPR, which will pick up the former leading driver at the expense of Steven Richards.
Early this week, Paul Morris Motorsport signed Fujitsu sensation Steve Owen to replace Murphy at the Norwell-based team. Owen took out the reserve grade series earlier this year and finished second at Bathurst with Jamie Whincup.
"I think he is the hottest property out there," Morris said.
"He races because he loves racing and doesn't do it for any other reason. That is what we need here.
"It is his passion and commitment that will help us go to another level in the new year."
