JUST a fortnight after Ben Graham's Super Bowl appearance, Marcos Ambrose is set to become the latest Australian to make history in an American sporting showpiece.
The former V8 Supercars champion will become the first Australian to line up in the iconic Daytona 500 when he begins his first full season in NASCAR racing's top-tier Sprint Cup series this weekend.
And along with the milestone will come his biggest-ever pay day, with even a last-placed finish set to earn him at least $379,800.
Ambrose and his new team JTG Daugherty Racing learned over the weekend they were guaranteed one of 35 starting spots for Monday's (AEDT) 200-lap race at Daytona Beach, Florida.
"I have to pinch myself every day because it is the biggest race there is," said Ambrose, who qualified 30th-fastest on Sunday ahead of two heat races later this week.
"I'm really looking forward to my first Daytona 500 because it is huge for me personally to be able to experience it first-hand.
"For years, I have read about the race in magazines while living in Australia and it intrigued me."
The 32-year-old Tasmanian is stepping up to the top level of NASCAR racing in just his third year racing in the US.
He had 11 starts in the full NASCAR Championship last year as well as a full season in the second-tier Nationwide series, including a race victory and an overall top-ten finish.
He admits this season is "make-or-break" for him, and wants to get off on the best possible foot on Sunday in what is the biggest race of his career.
Ambrose said he hoped for better fortune than that of compatriot Graham, after the Australian punter's Arizona Cardinals went down to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl.
"Hopefully I can get the job done and win the 500 to make up for it," said Ambrose, who met Graham in 2004.
"But I think just the experience for me this first year is what it's all about.
"I just want to settle in, do the right thing and show everybody that I can do it."
Ambrose won't be to only Australian in the limelight at Daytona, with country music superstar Keith Urban to perform at the pre-race show.
