Marcos Ambrose has had his first win in NASCAR.

well done champ..

MARCOS Ambrose claimed his maiden NASCAR win with victory in the Zippo 200 at Watkins Glen International in New York.

Ambrose is the first Australian to earn a NASCAR victory and his historic feat on the 3.94km road course lifts him into the top 10 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series standings.

On Monday, Ambrose will look to repeat the effort when he races in the top-tier NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Watkins Glen.

Since leaving Australia to pursue a career in NASCAR in 2006, the former V8 Supercar champion has made 83 NASCAR starts across the Craftsman Truck Series, Nationwide Series and top-flight Sprint Cup Series.

The win is the first for JTG Daugherty Racing team since former NBA star Brad Daugherty bought in and the first victory for the operation since August 23, 1996 when Jeff Fuller won at Bristol Motor Speedway, also in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

"It's a big relief," said Ambrose.

"I've come along way, I've dragged my family halfway around the world, away from my dad and mum, and everybody who needs me back in Australia, and today it just feels like it's worthwhile.

"It feels like I've conquered a huge mountain, and it's just a great day."

With 12 laps to go Ambrose was in third position, but the two cars ahead ? Jeff Burton and Jimmie Johnson ? ran low on fuel and were forced to pit.

Ambrose's combination of car speed and smart pit strategy came to the fore and the 31-year-old from Launceston, Tasmania collected his first NASCAR win by four seconds from Kyle Busch, with Matt Kenseth finishing third.

Next year Ambrose will race full-time in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series with JTG Daugherty Racing.

Marcos really looked the goods the week before at Montreal where he was driving away from the field in the rain, and unfortunate penalty and an early red flag probably robbed him of a win in that one, (he finished third)

Go the "Tassie Devil"

He has been knocking on the door for some time now. It is excellent to see him finally break through and get the maiden win. Well done to him.

What a couple of drives from 43rd to 3rd in cup that was amazing stuff and a win in Nationwide. Reward for taking a huge risk and safety of home no harder series to crack great stuff.

Ambrose is all class.

What i love about him is that he is so good he still gets under the skin of all the Holden Precious.
The fact that he hasn't been here for a few years and they still hate him proves how good this guy is.
Not only that there wasn't Holden driver that didn't go to water when Ambrose was around.
The only way they got the better of him was with a gutless c@#t act by kiwi arsehole that whose ego has it's own solar system.
I wish Ambrose was still here. I honestly believe that if he had stayed here we might have seen the greatest driver in Australias history.
No one has achieved so much in such a short time excluding Lowndes who had HRT machinery at his disposal. Difference between Lowndes and Ambrose is Lowndes drives at good teams
Ambrose builds them around him with good solid knowledge

Ambrose was certainly in a class of his own when he was here.. He claimed pole in his first ever outing in a V8. Theyre arnt too many other people who can say that, i dont think.

I always remember that race at Phillip Island in the AU. I think it was his second year, right when Skaife was completely dominant, and he passed him (or maybe it was Bright) on the last corner to get Fords first win in aaaagggeesss..... i remember running up and down the hallway, i was so pumped with the win... Peregrine and i have long referred to him as 'The Messiah'.

Like Col said, he builds his teams up around him, and inspires them to deliver. All the interviews post-meet I've seen have his employers singing his praises. The bloke is class, pure gold. Again, like Col, I miss him, and believe he could well have turned the local scene on its head had he stayed. I reckon the biggest part of the story that gets up the nose of his detractors is that he's almost casually picked up two (and almost a third) title here, and waltzed off to the States and shown them a thing or two there.

I'd love to see him back here.

Skaife would have a coronary.
Murphy would only get close to him as Ambrose lapped him.
Tander would lose the plot and go all girlsville
pRick Kelly's voice would get higher pitched and he'd start telling the world he was better than Brock again.
Bingall would try to be his team mate again so he could use his set up to win a championship
And last but not least the Holden Precious would be like rabid dogs all frothing at the mouth about how he punted off their best drivers while in front of them and how their past idols were better by their results. Results that took 20 plus years to get while Ambrose achieved his in less than the number of ingers on your hand.

Ambrose is 31 years old.
I hope he wins a lot real fast in the USofA. That way he might get back here earlier and link up with a top line Ford team and win 4 or 5 more championships and 6 or 7 Bathursts

a..hem ! he said, IIRC, that he was the next Brock, but that he would get those results in half the time,

literal translation is that he would be better than Brock.

Nope sorry TS, dont agree...

Never once have I heard Rick, or any other driver say that he or she was better than Brock.
He said it at Bathurst in 2005 when he quoted that he had achieved more in his short career than Brock had at the same age. He also added more dribble in there to compare himself against Brock.

He did HH.

That dumb candy ass did finally make it well known what a dipstick he really is that day......

I think it was also along the lines that he said to Brock, that Brock would not have acheived the success he had in the 70's and 80's, if he had to compete in the V8 supercar catagory with the cars, teams and drivers that are racing today.

Well if Brock had to race for HSV/HDT mega$$$ racing team, Brock probably would have.
