I have read on V8supercars.com that the Barbagallo and Winton rounds will be run using only the soft option tyre. Im not sure how this will play out, but wasn't the soft tyre introduced to spice up the racing, create more passing and hopefully give some of the mid field teams a chance to run at the front?
With all of the cars using the same tyres at the same time apart from lap times, whats the difference in running the standard control tyres?. The strong well financed teams will still be at the pointy end and everyone else will play follow the leader!

so back to business as usual.

I wasn't too keen on the Soft tyre idea because at the start we saw too many of the backmarkers put the soft tyres on at the end of race 2 and go into demolition derby mode causeing kaos, in a desperate bid to actually win a race.

I think only using the softs is no different ot just using the control tyre, and a waste of time.[bgn]

I think the idea is that the softs degrade a bit quicker than the control (i.e. have a greater differential between new and old) and add more of a strategy element, while removing the chaos you first eluded to!

Strange decision by VESA considering that QR along with both these circuits complained that the soft tyres caused damaged to the tracks surface.

It should actually improve the racing though and I don't mean artificially.
The guys who go hell for leather will be wobbling all over the shop before too long and those who can go quickly without destroying the tyre should fare much better.

its a shame they've decided to retain the limited soft tyre usage rules at other tracks. I thought the advantage the soft tyres gave against the control was laughable. Yes it is a strategic decision on when to use them during the weekend given the 1 set limit, but I think it adds too much gamesmanship and removes the entire purpose of having a mostly controlled category.

The even playing field back on the softs for at least 2 rounds I think is a good thing because it will provide the entire field with equal grip advantage, but I had the same thought as you Poita....what's with Barbagallo whinging about track damage last week, now this....might not be too popular....V8SC might be reaching for the wallet for track resurfacing.

Or . . . . . . . it could just become predictable as the teams with buckets of cash and technical experts on the handling side work out how to set up the car for the softs since they are to be used for the whole of the race.

Having them for part of the each race over the weekend does put a bit of uncertainty into teams strategy because they have to compromise to a certain extent in setting the cars up for the controll tyre stint, and that's what will go if they're using them for a round at a time.

I first brought up the idea of a softer compound about 4 years ago.
However they way VESA use them is a joke.
The minimum race distance should be 250km and they should get a set to use each race and the last ten laps should all be on the control tyre to stop the demo derby happening.
Either that or get rid of the control tyre and let them go silly on the soft option or make them more like a Group C tourer and get rid of the huge brakes and wings.
On the brakes. If your braking distance is 100m and you have 5% better braking then the guy you're trying to pass will still be able to defend the corner. Remember you're only going to gain a car length there.
If your braking is 150 metres you now have enough of an advantage to get past and cleanly.
On the wings.
You can't get right up under the bumper of the car in front with out losing downforce. If they have less aero it doesn't matter and you can go right up underneath and still have the same corner speed.
VESA should watch some NASCAR at Watkins Glen.
Lots of overtaking under brakes , cars being able to slip stream and use it and best of all froma veiwers point watching them slide all over the place.
While your at it. Get rid of all data gathering apart from mechanical readouts.
Only problem with this. The drivers wouldn't like it because they have to drive like they did in the old days and look after the tyres and car

Im with you Bigcol. If they want to provide "entertainment", they need to get back to basics, less aero, less data, show us some seat of the pants racing..................the way it used to be.
Nascar is a perfect example as is the Biante touring cars and even the aussie racing cars.
I just want to watch good hard racing, where the best driver on the day wins regardless of how much cash they have or what colour the walls on their tyres are.
