With the expansion to 2 cars in the Konica Minolta series we now see number 81 being used on a DJR car. Is this the first time? Number 71 has been used before ,but in what year was it first used by DJR?

I think it was used by Greg Ritter in 2002.

But what about these numbers : 19 and 28.
Who used them and when ?

71 was used a fair while back.... and if we go further back through the mists of time, the origin of Dick's #17 is tied up with another car, numbered 71.

There were a couple of car 19's within DJR, so there's more than one chance at this one...

O.K. now the origin of 17 has me stumped. Some of Dick's racing numbers are FJ Holden 27,38,58 EH Holden 17 and LJ GTR Torana 4 and 17 so he had been using 17 way before i got interested in motorsport. Can't find any cars with number 71 on them back in that time. I have looked at the True Blue Video ,Don't tell me I can't do that and the Unforgiving moment books. Does not seem to mention the origin of the number 17.

He had a mate who raced with #71, and he thought 17 would be a nice match for that. And that's all she wrote. It's been a while since anyone made a number their own in such a comprehensive fashion. Some of the others did have a favourite number, but changed in time due to sponsors etc (Moffat's #9, Harvey's #76), but to the best of my recollection, nobdy has carried a number for as long as Dick ran 17.

Thanks Henry ,that's certainly something I didn't know.

Correct me if i'm wrong but wasn't #71 used on the Mustang at bathurst in the last year of group C.I think it was entered by DJR so they could have a play before the season started and in case they broke the XE.That year there was Rover Vitesse's entered as well. The Mustang was white with green signwriting if memory serve's me correct[^]They qualified the car and that was it[?] Steven Johnson made his SATCC debut in 95 in the Fudruckers EF carrying the #19

Big Col, you've nailed it. 19 was also the spare car in 1994; IIRC it only went out on the first day of practice, in case some of the weekend warriors got a little loose in front of them.

They ran a third Sierra for (I think Kayne Scott & ???) in 1991(?) as 19. I haven't had a chance to have a good look at my reference material to confirm year and drivers yet... the car was right off the pace though, not aided by practice glitches with the two main cars

Yes it was the Mustang in 1984 . From memory I think Dick took the Mustang as a back-up car just in case he had a problem like in the previous years qualifiying. I too think that Steven ran the #19 on the Fudruckers Falcon .

Yeah the Mustang was there as a belt and braces after the incidents of 83. The original intentionwas to have two Falcons available, but that changed. It also gave them the chance for a quick shakedown of their Group A contender for 1985. The Fuddruckers car was 19 as I remember it too.

Does this mean Dick has 2 Australian racing records - the longest amount of time a driver has had a number & the longest running Australian motorsport team.

How long did Brock have the 05 for?

Brock took on 05 in 1975 (IIRC), but raced that year as "5" only; his BMW in 88 carried 55 (again IIRC - I'll check it out tonight) While 05 is just as famous as 17, DJ's favourite number has been around longer. Hell, LP used 11 uninterrupted for 12 years too (plus he had used in for a couple of years here and there as well)

Mind you 17 hasn't always been a lucky number for Dick... hence my next question...

MN had something on this in the Breakout section of their Eastern Creek coverage in 2002. Dick was talking about a mate, Graham Middleton, who ran the number 71. Dick went on to say that Middleton had died from cancer 'some time back'. Brock's BMW carried 05 for the 1988 ATCC, the Pepsi 250 and the Enzed 500. Due to Bathurst's recognition as an FIA-sanctioned race for the 1988 Asia-Pacific Touring Car Championship, Brock was not allowed to run 05. Brock entered his BMW's as #55 and #56, despite having run the second and third BMW's as #1 for Jim Richards and #7 for Neil Crompton in the ATCC. Brock drove #56 in the 1988 Bathurst 1000 with Neil Crompton, leaving David Parsons and Jim Richards to drive #55. Both didn't finish.
