MOTOR racing legend Peter Brock may not have always lived up to his Peter Perfect tag, but he was not a violent or aggressive man, his former partner Bev Brock said today.
Mrs Brock today said she was disappointed to have to defend the late sporting icon against allegations of domestic violence that surfaced in a women's magazine, published today.
In an interview with New Idea, former Miss Australia Michelle Downes alleges Brock repeatedly beat her and encouraged her to have an abortion during their brief marriage more than 30 years ago.
Ms Downes claimed their year-long union was marred by frequent beatings that began on their honeymoon, and sometimes left her bruised and bleeding.
However, Bev Brock today questioned the timing of the allegations, which come just over two months after the man dubbed The King of the Mountain was killed while participating in a West Australian rally.
Mrs Brock said that during her relationship with Peter Brock, which spanned nearly three decades, she never saw him raise a hand to anyone.
?It is disappointing that after 35 years, when Peter is not here to defend himself, that stories regarding his supposed violence chose to surface,? Mrs Brock said in a statement.
?In the 28 years that Peter and I were together, there was never any sign of violence or aggression of any kind.
?Peter was a complex but gentle soul who could not even bring himself to discipline his children.
?I never saw him raise his hand to anyone or anything in all of that time.
?He spent those years dedicating himself to assisting those in the community who were in need of a helping hand or a kind word.?
In her interview, Ms Downes said Mr Brock demanded sex up to six times a day and would get very moody over professional frustrations.
?I was running down the street with Peter chasing me,? Ms Downes said, recounting one incident.
?And with his full force he just grabbed me and threw me face down on the concrete. I was cut and bleeding.?
Several months later, in December 1974, the former weather girl attempted suicide, claiming she was driven to the brink by another beating and an unwanted abortion.
She told the magazine Mr Brock had wanted to start a family but four months into her pregnancy he delivered an ultimatum.
? ... Peter suddenly came home one night and announced: 'I've decided we shouldn't have a baby. And if you do, I'll leave',? Ms Downes said.
Ms Downes said she had always wanted to speak out about the violence but had felt ashamed and wanted the now-legendary racing driver's career to flourish.
?All I ever wanted to hear him say was that he was sorry,? she said.
Bev Brock, who had three children with Mr Brock before their relationship ended in May last year, said there were many people seeking to capitalise on her former partner's death.
?As a family, we would appreciate being left to remember an incredible man who was not always perfect, yet deserves to be remembered for the amazing things he achieved in his life,? she said.
At the time of his death, Mr Brock was in a new relationship with Julie Bamford.
