And now for my next question! Dick and DJR have had a number of well-publicised non-finishes in Australia's Greatest Race, including the Rock in 1980, the Bill O'Brien incident in 1993, and the events of 1983, culminating in a DNF in a car that was "such a dog, we should have left it chained to the fence".

HOWEVER, when he DID make it home, Dick generally finished very well indeed... see if you can remember the lowest position in which Dick has been classified as a finisher at the Mount Panorama enduro.

Hi Big Col, glad to see you over here! When I came up with this question, it occurred to me that DJ's placings at Bathurst were rather impressive: when I was just a wee DJR fan (and even when I was a bit bigger), any year that we didn't win was a rather sorrowful occasion (if the car DNF'ed early, it was almost enough for me to completely lose interest in the whole race) and had obviously overshadowed the actual results.

You guys ae just too on the ball with these answers: I'll have to start getting tough...

Talking of DNF's, name the year, place & who lent him the replacement car when Dick discovered trees are tougher than cars. Oh, & what happened to the car on the grid & why?

What about 13th in 1985 driving the Mustang with Larry Perkins or was that not classified? I do remember Dick being excluded from the results one year because of the cylinder heads were not right.

It was 1983 at Bathurst where Andrew Harris / Gary Cooke done a deal with Dick so he could race after destroying his Falcon at Forrest Elbow during the Top 10 shootout. Not sure what happened on the grid before the race but i will have a guess, was the paint still wet as the car was only finished after a overnight rebuild?

DJ and LP dragged the Mustang back into the Top 10 by the end of the 1985 race, eventually finshing 7th (think where it could've been without the incidents!). The year that he got rubbed out over alleged cylinder head irregularities was 1982, after trolling around in a Valvoline haze (it used a couple of gallons of XLD during the day, and Dick said all the horsepower just "dribbled out the exhaust") with a broken sway bar. He and Frenchy had managed to get it home in fourth, two laps behind Brock. It had not been a great day.

He blew a fuse on the grid because something hadn't been wired right. You'd want to ball your eyes out at that wouldn't you.

Aww shucks., Mitchell![:I]

The 83 Mk2 car had a fuse in the line to the alternator light on the dash, which blew, so when the diodes in the alternator packed it in, nobody knew! They figured it out a bit later, and I think what ultimately stopped the car was that the lube pump on the gearbox packed it in when she ran out of power, and the gearbox eventually broke. The whole saga of Bathurst 83 will get its own thread very shortly; it's a ripping yarn, as the fun didn't stop when the car did....STAY TUNED!

correct me if i am wrong, havent looked at the book
but didnt the deal with Andrew Harris and Garry Cooke, end up seeing them in a Commodore for the race???
Even if this car didnt have the problems , ie electrical / gearbox, it was never going to be a threat, it was no where near as good a car as the ones that hit the trees

Andrew Harris did end up driving a Commodore for Bathurst 1983.

Please correct me if I am wrong. But I dont think he ever drove a Falcon at Bathurst again.
I know he teamed up with Warren Cullen in a 2 car Commodore team for the following year.

Yep, not a good year. They had tweaked the motor on Thursday and Friday nights, and DJ completely rebuilt one of Saturday night. Roy ran her in on the Blayney-Orange road in the wee small hours of Sunday morning(the pollice closed them off a section of the road). Evidently some lady in her Mazda got a bit of a start when the big blue girl went WHOOOSSHH past her!
