I haven't seen this raised elsewhere, but a new article is on speedcafe.

It includes this quote from Steve:

"We don’t like to get stuff out into the public that doesn’t need to be there.

"It has been very hard. There’s a lot more to the business side of the dealings than anyone knows about, and there’s a lot more little things that people don’t know about.

"Dad got quite sick at the end of last year. I don’t really want to go into it, but he wasn’t well. At one stage I didn’t even know if he was going to make it to the end of the year, the way things were going. That was pretty gut wrenching."

All I can say is that given the amount of bad luck and a few other things plus his Dad not being well, Then he is definatly a Title Contender in waiting if the environment is right and should be right up in the Top 5.

I really enjoyed reading that. Sounds to me like Steve, Dick and the rest of the family/team are in a good place. Theyre excited about next year, and confident things will go well.

If im perfectly honest, i do find myself getting frustrated with Steven on a regular basis, but i love him like i love my mother.... doesnt matter how much the guy bothers me sometimes, he ALWAYS gets my loudest cheer at the race track, and there is no one over the past 10 years i have followed closer than Steven Johnson. He will always be my favourite... and although he's never really been a SERIOUS title contender (there was that one year, maybe 2002, when he finished second wasnt there???) this season certainly wasnt up to his standard, and i can see him really taking things by the scruff of the neck next term.

He knows the car is quick, and the focus will be back on him...

Come on Stevey J!!!!!

Same here

Always refreshing reading an interview with Steve as he comes across like the top bloke we all know he is

Wouldn't of been a great place to work though when one of your bosses won't talk to you

2001 Mitchell. Steve finished 5th in the championship and the 1st Ford driver.
Also the year of his 1st pole position and his only Two (2) wins.

He's right, that little bit in the last half dozed laps this year to keep a hrd charging Whincup out of contention totally by just one place was a drive and a half, now to get that kind of driving for 67 laps or whatever, and it would be championship winning stuff.

On another tack, I wonder what charlie is thinking right now, after supporting James so singlemindedly, polarising the team between the two cars, and almost dividing and ruining the whole team in the process, . . . and yet still having the guts to walk away in the end without destroying it and leaving it intact and as healthy as can be expected, and more importantly with a future.

I expect he's wondering how it all went wrong really.

Its the old adage guys. One should always try to avoid going into business with friends. There is a personal thing that happens where business partners expect their mate to behave or think in a particular way. The way they've always acted and thought. When they don't, there is disappointment and it festers from there.

I did it, and I learnt a lot. I wasn't a gr8 businessman. Glad to say though that we came out the other side having retained our friendship.

Good to hear that most of the team stayed together but there still looks to be a few holes to fill. I think it would be interesting to hear the Johnsons view as opposed to Charlie's. I hope Stevie J steps up, I think he can!:D

I count, from that interview, 4 key engineering personnel who have left, in addition to the championship-winning driver, a co-owner, plus by Steve's own admission, a couple more unidentified people.

As much as I'd love to see the Jim Beam Racing cars occupying the front row at Abu Dhabi in 2011, it would seem that there is much to be done to rebuild our competitive stocks. But at least the mood is positive.

I'm hoping that Steve is motivated and prepared for 2011... he seems to give his best when his back's firmly to the wall, and so hopefully his mindset is one of bloody battle.

His drive to hold Whincup out in the dying stages of the final race was an epic one, same as his web-footed efforts at Bathurst a few years back, to round up Lowndes, who actually had to go to Full Mongrel Mode to successfully put #17 behind him in that race.

2011 is potentially another great year for us who love and adore The Team... but it's not going to be all beer and skittles...
