On speedcafe today is a topic about the above, which reflecting back to Mark Potter days, I don`t think it is a wise descission to let 18 year olds or there abouts debut in a V8 supercar at Bathurst. [tsk]

If they were to put a ban on young 18 year olds competing at Bathurst (especially 1994) then we wouldn't have Steve Johnson and Craig Lowndes as household names in the series Ross.

Mark Porter's death was a very unfortunate accident but could have happened to anyone else. Mark was a very experienced driver not just some rookie.

Yea, True...But It has grown a fair bit since then and Bathurst is a fast & Dangerous track..Remember every one getting up the guy who T.Boned D.J. for being a once a year whatever they called him.

Did Sj actually Debut in a V8 at Bathurst or was he experianced a little in a V8 before hand. [sh]

I just feel they should have a certain amount of miles in a V8 before jumping on a track like Bathurst.

Good Luck to the guys and wish them well but if it were my son I think i would try and stall him for a while.

No Junior didn't debut at Bathurst but IIRC he had only a couple of starts before then in the V8supercars.
Oran Park in the Fuddruckers car and the Sandown 500.

But in saying that he had, like these other young fellas plenty of experience driving other forms of racecars but no previous Bathurst experience.

EDIT: Steve drove in the 12 hour production race at Bathurst with Dick earlier in the year (1994)

What ever happened to the in car "Caution" system? I was there when the Porter crash happened and would like to see this introduced, Even if it just from the Cutting to the Elbow.
So many blind corners, The flaggies could just press a button at their flagpoint if a car is in a very dangerous position.
With all the tech we have that is wireless why can't this be done?

It's one of the things I don't understand either, same with the whole safety car thing, surely they can just automatically set the cars to say 80kmph so that the lead someone has built up doesn't disapear and so that those who are 5 laps down can't catch up a lap (without actually passing anyone) each time the safety car comes out.[rt]

For safety reason, automatically slowing the cars sounds like a good idea... But if you took away the safety car you'd take away alot of the fun of Motorsport.. im not one that hangs out to see a big "exciting" crash... but i do enjoy a good pace car bunching up the field.. :D

Young drivers have never been the problem... Van Gisbergen and Rick Kelly, Jnr and Lowndes.. and im certain there's more... these guys all started in their teens and were never an issue..

Young, talented drivers have never been an issue... it's old, crap ones that you need to look out for.. i.e. David Thexton and Paul Morris

perhaps not a great example, i'll admit :D but hey! cant ignore the fact that he was the youngest ever champion (although if i remember right he punted Lowndes ofd the track at Phillip Island to win it, didnt he?)

Anyway.. give me Rick Kelly over David Thexton any day of the week..

Thexton may have been slow but at least he stayed on the same line!! :D

Kelly in his first two seasons was downright dangerous most of the time, remember the t boneing of Bright at Indy? for example, but that was more his rich kid attitude and poor loser personality than his age, and while Thexton did get in the way a bit as a backmarker, he wasn't overtly blocking and hostile or ever engaged in deliberate ramming, as both the kelly's have at one time or another.
