Dicks stint in Nascar was brought up in another topic (bigcol) and the first thing I thought of was Dick using colourful language on racecam in the US or as one commentator put it "how about that accent".

I started to think of some of the better racecam moments (most of them Dicks) and thought you blokes may have some I've forgotten.

My favorite is probably from 83/84 Bathurst when Dick broke an axle while talking to the Minister for sport. The cross being cut short after some understandable "colorful language".

You don't see any drivers talking on Racecam anymore but Dick could tell jokes while chasing someone down.

Yes DJR-FAN, Dick had a heap of those classic comments. I hope there are a lot of replies to this thread just so we can remember them again. I'd like if he somehow could release a book on them. I remember when, I think at Winton one year, he was up Larry Perkins, questioning his vision after he punted Dick out of the race.

Also remember one year at Bathurst down conrod, race cam with Jim Richards filming Dick as he was slowly overtaking Dick, then you see Dick plant the boot into that Ford V8, gave the camera a smile and a nod and drove right past Jim. I thought, "Johnson you bloody show off". He didn't have to say a word. I loved it.

The very first in car camera was in a Celica cant remember the driver but it was cutting edge and it was great to watch and listen to.

I think his name is Peter Williams (Williamson?)and I think he was a Toyota dealer of the 70's. He was quite amusing with the comments as well, such as mid way through talking he'd warn us of the big V8's coming up from behind, about to put a lap on him and he'd almost shreik with fright as they flew past him.

Williamson. He was nicknamed "the FLying Mouth" by many, and used to blitz the baby car class at Mount Panorama. He was renowned for using 10000rpm in the Celica, and motoring around the bigger stuff across the top. He was also the guy who got creamed from behind at Murray's Corner by the #17 XC in 1978, forcing them to try to open the Celica's boot with an axe for refuelling at the next stop.

His group A experiences weren't great: in 1984, his ex-Win Percy Supra was creamed in the start-line shunt which eliminated the Walkinshaw/Goss XJ-S and the Bartlett-owned Camaro, leased to John Tesiorero and the late Bob Tindal. He rebuilt this car, rolled it at Oran Park in either 85 or 86, rebuilt it again, destroyed it in practice for the 1986 Hardie, rebuilt it and failed to qualify for 1987.

He also ran AF2, sold his hand-me-down Celicas to Graeme Bailey, who used them well, winning the tiddler class with Grafton Toyota dealer Doug Clark in 1980 in an ex-Willo car. Willo was also the original owner of the Alexandra Surplice Corolla Levin which John Harvey clouted at Sandown in 1982.

As an additional piece of trivia, Willo's brother-in-law, Mike Quinn, was a Toyota works driver, and won the small-car class in 1986, partnering John Faulkner (later to become a prominent V8Supercar privateer steerer and team owner).

Peter Williamson.
Watching the 81 bathurst highlights at a party recently and the Celica had left Forrests Elbow and was out of the next kink at the start of Conrod, when Peter said here comes the race leader Dick Johnson. All you saw was the front bumper coming around the corner. Then a bit more and then all of a sudden it was past him.The Camera was flat out turning quick eough to keep up with closing and overtaking rate.Earlier in the race Dick went past Williamson just before he had to get on the anchors. It nearly sucked the Celica off the road.Williamson said there goes Dick. Here comes Dick as Williamson went past under brakes, went around the corner in front and before the bridge Dick was in front and by the time Williamson got to Mountain Straight you couldn't see TruBlu

And didn't the big blue girl sound like she was doing it easy?

I recently saw a snippet from Racecam in 1982 (believe it to have been from #17), watching a group of cars cresting the Conrod humps at speed.... you should have seen how out of shape #05 got!

I likeed the one at Bathurst in 1995-ish (spirt round) when channel 7 where talking to Dick & he was in first spot & the wing broke & Dick went off at the end of the straight & the commentors went quite as they throught they made him spin off. classic

DJ was very composed, considering exactly how far the car travelled from the inital moment, to the point where he grabbed first gear and powered back on... it was a pity they never captured on Racecam, his moment in 1988 where he got a blowout on the first Conrod hump...

Joe, it was '95 (round 1??). I think it was the car that had won the 1000 only a few months before, Dick was still on a high and well in control of the race.

ive got a few.

on racecam (IIRC) "this cars worse than a dog on lino" could be wrong with that quote.

in the mustang in 85' (i think)
"this race...is like the irishman who won the tour de france...he had to go for a lap of honour"

at lakeside in 93 or 94 after spinning on someone elses oil & being interviewed on racecam

"the old girl needs a bit of a tart up before the next race"

Here is a post I made over 12 months ago on exactly this topic....

There are so many to choose from. Where do I start....?

:)"I'm busier than a dog trying to bury a bone on a marble floor here!" (RaceCam, Bathurst '86)

:)"This race is like the Irishman that won the Toure de France I tell ya...he had to go on a lap of honour" (RaceCam, Bathurst '86).

:)"Poor old Robbie (Francevic), the worst 5 years of his life was when he was in grade 3 I think" (RaceCam, Bathurst '86).

:)"Mate he'd (Tom Walkingshaw)protest against the colour of his bag-pipes if he could!" (Bathurst '88).

:)"If you put the curse of the black jellybean on me I'll break your eyes!" (Bathurst '89)

:)"Winton? It's like running a marathon around your clothes line!" (RaceCam, Winton'90).

:)"...and that thing of his...(Brocks' Sierra puffing smoke)...I nearly choked to death on Mobil 1. It looks like the last train to Ferny Grove!" (RaceCam, Oran Park '90).

:)"...this bird here (female competitor), she's like an ashtray on a motorbike!" (RaceCam, Bathurst '90).

:)"Even the Sierra on 1 cylinder has got about as much grunt as the Commodore!" (RaceCam, Winton '91).

:)"I think I've run over a Chinaman. In fact...I think I've run over a whole colony of them!" (RaceCam, Bathurst '91).

:)"Ohhh I think Brock (spinning into the dirt)needs a spade! Whoops (Dick also spins into the dirt)looks like you'd better get me one too" (RaceCam, Eastern Creek '94).

:)(check out my signature for this one)

:)(after a dog had earlier run onto the track) "...I've hit mineral here before...and vegetable...and I thought to myself "Not an animal?!"" (Bathurst '96).

Every single one is a favourite of mine...

Rob17 a great collection of quotes.
Look how many cameras we have now and were as well even in the rumble strips now.

Some great quotes Rob17. "The curse of the black jellybean" is my all time favourite quote, I still use it regularly.

Ford lover and Rob17. Great quotes. How did you find them? Only Dick could call them like that. A lot of good memories.
