But while the form of the TeamVodafone duo is no surprise, the man who has been the third best qualifier so far this year is something of a surprise – Steven Johnson.

While he may have only been able to snare one podium result so far this year at Winton and sits ninth in the championship, the Jim Beam Racing ace has been exceptional in the sessions where ultimate pace is required.

He’s currently qualifying at an average of 6.91, a marked improvement over his average qualifying positions of recent years (11.9 in 2010, 11.16 in 2009, 13.54 in 2008) and is the only driver in a multi-car team to have out-qualified his teammate (James Moffat) on all 11 occasions so far this year.

Given Moffat is a rookie in his first V8 Supercars Championship season; this is perhaps to be expected.

The full list of qualifying averages from the season so far is below and it makes for some interesting reading

I knew he'd been qualifying better this year but those stats are amazing.
All he needs now is a little more race luck.

It's awesome to see Steve getting some front row action and even some good results this year, if this is the preview for the rest of the year it's going to be one where i expect him to be moving up the list pretty soon.
