I was thinking about this after talking to Doug the other night about the books we've collected over the years... As a rabid fan of car racing, I've done my best to read just about anything I could find on racing, and racing drivers. I thought it might be fun to hear what people have read and enjoyed. I'll start with:

1] Just about anything Bill Tuckey has written. Loved his "Great Race" books from 1981 to 1988, "The Unforgiving Minute" (naturally) and "The Rise and Fall of Peter Brock", which gave some great background on both Brock and John Harvey.

2] "Motor Racing - the Australian Way" by various contributors, including luminaries such as Geoghegan, Moffat, Matich, Jane, Tuckey, Phil Irving and many more (it was published in 1971, my old school libray had a moth-eaten copy of it 20 years ago, and I've love to get my paws on a copy now!)

3] "To Hell and Back" - Niki Lauda's autobiography, which was a matter-of-fact narrative of his life to the end of 1985. A great insight into the F1 driver I admired above all

4] "Gilles Villeneuve" - Gerald Donaldon's bio on the bravest, and perhaps the craziest man to drive F1, ever. If you've ever seen the photo of Gilles at Monaco in 1980's Ferrari 312T5, with the car pointed at the camera as it crests the rise, the driver's helmet looking down the road, with armfulls of lock on, the car obviously travelling at near-as-dammit to 90 degrees to the direction it's pointing, you'd probably want to read the story of the little French-Canadian who immortalised #27, and cam to embody the archetypal Ferrari driver, even 22 years after his death.

Those are the stand-outs, although Ive also enjoyed Alan Jones' "Driving Ambition", "Bluebirds" - the autobio of Gina (daughter of Donald, grand-daughter of Sir Malcolm) Campbell, and bios on Prost, Mansell, Senna, Jim Richards, Brock Yates' Enzo Ferrari biography, Donaldson's James Hunt Bio, Skaife's "Diary of a Champion", Murray Walker's "Unless I'm much mistaken...", Sir Lawrence Hartnett's "Big Wheels, Little Wheels" (which gave a great history of How Holden came to be)... ahh I'll read just about anything!

How about you?

Did you see a picture of the Hartnett.
I'm not into it as much as you Henry.
My collection is very small. Which sometimes is a real pain when you're trying to remember things that happened last century.
One pubilcation i look forward to every month is Australian Muscle Car.
Just love it.
Not just the stories about the Fords either

Mostly the Australian scene Henry. The Australian Motoracing yearbooks, The History of Australian Touring car Racing is another good one although probably time for another update as the one I have is for the completion of the 84 series. Obviously the 2 Dick Johnson books & I have 2 of Brocks as well. Also have a few copies of the Baturst book "The great Race". Probably the most important part of my reading collection is the Bathurst 1000 programs for the last 25 years. Also a few copies of The australian touring car racing annual & for some stupid reason I have the history of Holden in Australian Motorsport.

Hi guys,

I have most of the ones you've mentioned so far, the Tuckey/Chevron books and I also collect F1 champions biographies. However some of the other standouts for me are:

My Cars My Career by Stirling Moss and Doug Nye, for a good look at the golden years.

Unfair Advantage by Mark Donohue, a great look at how to be a professional racer.

For the Ford fans, there are some good ones out there that describe the era when Ford was totally committed to racing:

Ford Total Performance by Alex Gabbard

GT40 by Ronnie Spain

Holman-Moody by Tom Cotter

Trans Am The Pony Car Wars by Dave Friedman

Shelby American by Dave Friedman

Beejay - My collection of Great Race books and Motor Racing Years pale into insignificance when you mention Mark Donahue, one of the most underrated/undermentioned drivers in recent history. I would dearly love to get my hands on a copy - do you know if it is still in print??

Hey Beejay, love that list!

and to BigCol, there is a pic of the Hartnett included in that book: it's quite a story!

...and I can't wait for the newest Aust. Muscle Car every two months either! They've dredged up some great info, especially on the Gp C cars... can't wait for some of Moffat cars.. there are so many from which to choose!

Henry - I have similar recollections about Motor Racing The Australian Way, in fact I just bought a copy on eBay for $14 (plus $8 postage), brings back memories!

Doug - I am pretty sure you can still get Donohue's book in both soft cover and hard cover from www.pitstop.net.au

Seem's like you guys have pretty similar tastes. How are your magazine collections? Does anybody have a copy of 'Ford Muscle' from about 1971? I've seen some pages and it looks great. There were some pieces in a recent issue of Australian Muscle Cars about the Super Falcon. I'd love to see more of it...

Beejay - I have all the Bathurst programmes from 80 onwards - nothing prior to that - and all the Australian Motor Racing Years from then till the final in 95 as well. The grat race books and videos are occupying one of my wife's linen closets -and there are other bits and bobs as well - one of which was the hardcover story on jim Richards - interesting climb from obscurity for that guy!!!
PS Thx for the link -am about to have a peek

Well guys, looks like we'll have to catch up at Bathurst. I'm getting there some time prior to practice on Thursday morning. As Mitchell has probably mentioned, we camp inside the Paddock.
