found some interesting reading in AA
The obligatory annual driver weigh-in producing some suprise results.
I remember some of you guys talking about Jnr`s weight.
Inclusive of car weight + driver, helmet and full clothing the allotment is 1435kg with driver allowance of 85kg. 21 drivers weighed in under 85kg including lightweights Max Wilson and Paul Radisich at 68.5kg and at the other extreme was Jnr who in the past 3 years has varied from 117.5kg (04) down to 114.5kg (05) than up to this years 122kg.[:0] thats a fair bit extra to be carring around in a car.

So he has put on 7.5 kg in 12 months????

122 kg's... There is no excuse for that!!! Jnr makes it pretty hard for us to defend him when he's not having a go..

He is a fair lump of a lad! I am sure I remember him saying a few years ago that about 95kgs was an ideal weight for him. Looks like he has some work to do.

Bloody hell I knew he was big but 122kg's..... justifies what bigcol was saying earlier. No wonder the Development Series cars were going quicker than Jnr's, even with the weight added Denyer's car would still have been lighter than Steves.:D

You can tell jnr is over weight, you just have to look at his face. & I'm sorry I dont buy the "lets make driver weight part of min weight". If he really wanted too, jnr could get down to 90 kg. So he is a good 30kg over weight & his own fault. Maybe we can send him to the "biggest loser wins" for series 2? He better get is act together as I think Will is starting to show him a thing or two..

How much does wWll wieght? His a pretty talk person too.

Why should we have to defend him, this is V8 Supercars, not handicap horse racing. The purist of motor racing categories, Go Karting, have minumum weights for different classes. If you are too heavy move to the next class.

Why should the category discriminate because someone is 110kg and a large frome and in Juniors case over 6 ft tall. After the Clipsal, nobady has questioned his fitness only his weight. Maybe the two arent related.

ultimately BMI and fitness level are in fact determined differently , Young Steve obviously had the stamina and determination to last in the heat at the enduro's , but at what level does his concentration wane when he tires. You can be very fit and strong and still be overweight , but it's always preferable to get your BMI ( Body Mass Index ) down as this helps regulate the bodys use of sugars and fats , which are needed to optimise concentration.

Just a point of intrest , . . . . steve's car is at the smash this arvo looking for a front end , guards and nose off, rear bumber also off,

do we still call that plastic wrap-around skirt a bumper ?

I think Jnr's fitness level is high enough to match most of the other drivers in the category. Many drivers have suffered in Adelaide over the years, including one 68.5kg rat, but Jnr always seems to get through it and post consistant lap times at the end of the race.

I'm with newhat. I think he just a big bloke.

Being a big boned person myself I know that I could get smaller but I am too busy for the extra time.
But if I was a full time driver as I could spend that extra time in the gym I think I would get lighter. If he was winning who would care??

Big Pete's weight probably wasn't recorded. That was an era when blokes could down beers, pies and anything else they wanted and still be one of the blokes.

I like seeing a big bloke like Junior in racing, with all the little runts in the game now, its almost as if we're starting to breed them small to be V8 supercar drivers. Won't surprise me if they begin to recruit drivers from the horse racing industry.

Sorry to sound like i'm harping on here but if my Dad gave me a drive in the V8's i'd look like a Kampuchean refugee to get the weight down.
This isn't just about him being a big boy, it's about dedication.
If he was serious he'd be down to 95kg

Big Col, i have seenthe pics and he looks pretty good. It would have to be a condition of his drive/contract that e takes care of himself. He is 6ft 2/3 and 110 kg.
He shouldnt the same for others, be treated differently because he is a large boy, its archaic that they would reward smaller/lighter people. Sprintcars, minumum driver and car !!!!

Some seem to be missing the point some of us are getting at, Steve being overweight affects his lap times, were not having a go at him just because he is large.

V8 Supercars is not Horse Racing, but when you handicap someone to the tune of more than 50kgs than their team mate it has to make a difference when the minimum weight of the cars has to be the same.

Is the current V8 supercar a total weight, driver and car. Or is there an allowance made for a driver ???? Or is it minimum weight car and then add in your driver.

I agree with Poita lets stay the the facts here,up to 50kg extra in v8's isn't good is proberly the differance between finishing 10th or worse or in the top five or better.Yes Steve is a big framed man but does appear to be quite fit.I noticed on the v8supercar web site he is listed as 188cm and 100kg.
Some examples of big very fit men, this info is their playing weights and would more than likely be a couple of kg different during the year. The book was a 97 edition so sorry no recent examples.
Noted Plugger was listed as 110kg i think more likely 112 to 115kg at 191cm.
Justin Leppitsch 188cm/95kg

Joe Misiti 188cm/85kg

Jason Dunstall 188cm/98kg

Joel Bowden 188cm/86kg

Paul Roos 188cm/88kg

Car only, driver weight has no influence other than affecting performance.;)
