i havent had the chance to watch back the race on video, but can anyone shed some light on the Car 17 pitstop at about lap 45, just after Steve had passed the leaders and tghen there was Safety car and Car 17 pitted straight away.

I hope they were on fumes !!!

Maybe if they were on lead lap, no pressure to push on and no mistake by Will.

From what i understand is they got the car back on the lead lap albeit 6.1km behind the leader but they had to pit for fuel and tyres

What confused me was I thought when we got back on the lead lap and the safety car came out we would then go to the back of the cue on the lead lap, instead we were picked up in front of the front runners and doomed.

In previous years cars caught between the pacecar and the leader are waved passed and able to join the rear of the field. I have been told that this has changed. Can anyone shed light on this?

Sort of correct DJR-FAN.

The rule is when the safety car comes out it picks up the current leader.

Then any car that is in front of the leader on the road is allowed to go around and join the end of the line.

If the lead car then pits the cars that were already behind the leader when the safety car came out must stay behind the safety car. This is how lap cars end up between the safety car and the new leader.

Car 17 actually went into the pits BEFORE the safety car had picked up the leaders therefore lost the ability to join the end of the line. After 17 had been into the pits it was still one lap down, had Junior been able to do another lap and join the end of the line he wouldn't have been a lap down. The reason he did not do another lap is that the fuel light was on and wouldn't have made it.If the safety car had have been a lap earlier 17 could have been a lot better positioned and Wil wouldn't have had to push so hard.

Bathurst is all about "what if's" and this will be another in the HIstory books.
