DJR Team Penske will field two very special liveries at the Wilson Security Sandown 500 highlighted by the No 12 Ford of Fabian Coulthard and Luke Youlden running a new number.

In 1972, Roger Penske took Mark Donohue to the Indianapolis 500 in the No 66 Sunoco Special McLaren.
After a race where Donohue only led the final 13 laps, he crossed the line to deliver Team Penske its first win at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway in only the team’s fourth attempt. Donohue's average speed of 162.962 mph set a new race record that would last until 1984.
The livery was to become one of the most famous in the history of Team Penske. At Sandown, the ‘MightyMite Special Ford’ will celebrate that livery with the blue and yellow featuring prominently on the newly numbered ‘66’ for Coulthard and Youlden.

“The MightyMite Special is the first time we have used a Team Penske inspired livery here in Australia,” said DJR Team Penske MD Ryan Story.
“It marks a very special point in the history of the team as it was Roger’s first Indy 500 win with a truly legendary driver in Mark Donohue, who to this day remains the team’s winningest driver across multiple disciplines. Donahue was a ‘renaissance man’ and it’s a great privilege and honour to celebrate his ’72 victory and Team Penske’s 50th anniversary with this livery.”

The No 17 entry of Scott Pye and Tony D’Alberto will feature the 2003 Shell Helix design ran that year by Steven Johnson and Max Wilson.
In what was a striking design, Johnson ran the Shell Helix colours again in the following year and finished 10th in the 2004 V8 Supercars series in the BF Falcon. While the team has rolled out many of the famous Dick Johnson liveries at Bathurst in recent years, the 2003 Shell Helix design was chosen as it remains a fan favourite and one that that both Dick and Steve had considerable input into.

“In recent years we have rolled out a number of retro liveries at Bathurst,” Dick Johnson commented.
“But there is no doubt that the Shell designs are the ones that really relate to the fans. This one was special as Steve and I worked closely with the designers to come up with something quite different. We had run the red Shell Sierras and mostly yellow Falcons previously, so the 2003 Shell Helix design was something we wanted to really stand out. It will be great to see it out on track again.”

The significance of the two entries shows the success and history DJR and Team Penske have had on either side of the globe, and it is the first time the new look DJR Team Penske has celebrated two important eras from both organisations."

Not sure why we didn't get 17 on the door for the shell livery too, but damn it is good to see that livery back again.

Did anyone know they were testing today ?

[h=1]Safety tray on its way[/h]

DJR Team Penske has tested its foot and leg protection tray in both Ford Falcon FG Xs at Queensland Raceway today before debuting it at the enduros.
The development has garnered much attention after high profile crashes in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship last year and after input from the Supercars technical team and the CTAP (Chassis Technical Advisory Panel), it was assessed in the cars before tackling the high-risk enduros.
DJR Team Penske Managing Director Ryan Story said today’s test at Queensland Raceway ran smoothly with drivers and co-drivers, with no technical issues holding up the team.
Driver comfort and the ability to complete driver changes at speed were the key things to assess in relation to the safety tray before using it to race.
“This is the first time it has ever been in the car,” Story told supercars.com.
“It’s a matter of making sure we’re not compromising safety by having it, in its most ergonomic state. There’s a degree of driver comfort, getting in and out of the car, that needs to be accommodated as well – all of those things were taken into account.
“We had a couple of prototypes and have massaged the design from input from other teams, and have worked through the fit in the cars and the drivers’ comfort.
“We’ve made a couple more changes that have led us to what we have now, which is part of our package.”
The team is committed to running the safety tray for next week’s Wilson Security Sandown 500, but will further assess whether it is good to go as is, or needs more work.
“We might make some modifications to feedback from drivers after we’ve used it in anger today,” Story said.
“The drivers give feedback to the engineers throughout the day but sometimes it’s upon reflection – after thinking about it overnight – so we’ll have a debrief from the test day, catch up pre-event and might make a couple of changes as we load the cars into the truck.
“A lot of hard work has gone into it.”
Both Sandown and Bathurst have seen huge high speed accidents, with Chaz Mostert and Scott Pye’s crashes at Mount Panorama catalysts to hurry the project along.
Meanwhile, Triple Eight and TEKNO also tested today at Queensland Raceway.
Craig Lowndes’s TeamVortex car suffered a fire in the engine bay on start up, but the team reported no damage and only a minor delay this morning.
The day is key for Shane van Gisbergen’s co-driver Alex Premat, who was pleased with his run mid-afternoon.
“It has been a really good day on track,” he told the Red Bull Racing Australia website.
“This track I have driven before, but it would have been two years ago nearly. It is actually a hard track despite being very simple when you look at it. The long corners make it hard to find the limit.
“We have had a couple of practices with the driver change and pit stops ahead of next week, but it would be good to do some more. I am happy with what we have been doing and am very comfortable in the car.”

Just a side note, I would love to see white wheels on the Shell livery as the 2014 Johnson/Wall Bathurst car had the red wheels for the start.
It would look great sitting on the grid with the white wheels.
