As we've established in the other thread, Dick Johnson carried #17 for longer than any other driver has carried their "signature" car number. It wasn't always a lucky number for Dick however: Can you list at least two occasions where car 17 has stopped on lap 17 of the Great Race. From memory this occurred in several other events over the years as well...See how you go!

Yep, they're the ones I was thinking of. I'm pretty sure that it happened in other races once or twice, but the memory is letting me down for now.

I'll check the lap - I know it was early on... and it put Dick in a real good mood (lip-read his reaction when they tell him the car's stuffed on the highlights video :D

I nearly gave the race up for dead at that point. I was watching it on teev with my cousin, who's a Brock/Holden nut, so he was rather pleased at the time. I got my own back a bit later though! Actually the telecast that year was a doozy: Ten's first year, and they loved the idea of monitoring the goings-on inside the cars, complete with spy mike, but they weren't real quick with the faders... hence the F... word cropped up often during the day (does anyone remember Barry Sheene's post-victory interview with Russell Ingall, and Russell's reply to Baz's "Well Rusty, I guess there'll be a bit of a party tonight then?"?

I think that year's highlights tape from Chevron was the first with an "M" rating :D
