I don't remember John English racing a Torana Col. Always remember John for his drives in the Rock XD & Moffat's old XD..

So no, it's not English.

Sorry people, been busy. Henry, not Barry Lawrence & no NASCAR12, he's never driven 4 DJR.
I'm trying to think of another clue!!!

November 7 1982 he contested round 3 of the AEC in which Moffat won, Fury 2nd & DJ 3rd in the XE. I'm not sure where this particular driver finished as he wasn't listed but I know he qualified way down which is what you'd expect with a Torana in 1982.

He finished 7th just behind Carter at the Lakeside RD of the 1982 ATCC on April the 4th & finished 10th at Surfers behind John English at the final RD of the 82 ATCC on May 16..

I'm also pretty sure it was an L/34 & not an A9X so she was an old 4 door..

That's the one Doug.

He actually used to go half alright in the old L/34.
6th in the Lakeside rd in 81
9th at Surfers 81
13th at the Sandown 500 81

Well done Doug! I knew it would take an old hand to get this one!!!!

Hi Rob, the 81 Australian Motor Racing Year has the car listed as an A9x- whats the difference between the two models??

I,ve got mixed reports on it Doug. I'm reading the same book as you by the looks of it & in some time sheets it's reported as an A9X & a few pages over it was reported to be a L/34. For Rd 7, it was listed as an SLR which is older again.

The only pic I have of it is at Lakeside in 81 & from what I can observe, it looks like a 4 door which probably means it's an L/34 & not an A9X. Although there was a very limited run on A9X 4 doors, not many, if any were raced in the ATCC as the 2 door hatchback seemed to have benefits over the 4 door in race trim.

That's the best I can come up with Doug. Someone with more of a Holden back ground than me might be able to explain it better though..

It's funny how the hatchback Torana is regarded as the "definitive" A9X... but I believe it was made in lesser numbers than the four-door. HDT, Morris, Brock all had 4-doors at one stage or another. A bloke I knew had a four-door at one stage, which was a pretty quick jigger.... made the rest of his Holden collection (an impressive thing in its own right) look a little sluggish...

Shame of shames, I know some of this Torana stuff. Basically the L34 had a great motor with roller rockers and a strong block. But they could never be used to the full extent as the axles would break at the slightest provocation. Also the drum braked rear was pretty useless after a few laps. So the A9X had tougher Salisbury rear axle and four-wheel discs. The motor was pretty much L34, which always surprises me.

The bit I did look up is that it also had an optional T10 gearbox as the old M21 was a bit suspect, and modified control arm pivot points.
