Sprint Gas Racing has released Jason Richards from his duties with the team, allowing him to pursue another opportunity with the help of Holden Motorsport.

Richards had been with Sprint Gas Racing since its inception in 2004 when it was known as Tasman Motorsport and finished second at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 this year with Greg Murphy.

Sprint Gas Racing spokesman Tony Mee said Richards had not re-signed with the team for next year.

Richards notified Sprint Gas Racing at Oran Park that he had the opportunity to join another team.

?Jason shared a very good relationship with the team owners and he did the courteous thing and asked to be released,? Mee explained.

?Jason obviously felt that the time was right for him to move on, and the opportunity was a good one.

?We?re disappointed, but we wish him all the best for the future.

Mee said Richards? departure would not have an impact on Sprint Gas Racing?s 2009 plans.

?We have got a very definite strategy for 2009, a change in driver will not impact this,? he said.

Sprint Gas Racing is currently in the process of finding a new driver for the 2009 season.

?We?re in discussion with several drivers at the moment,? Mee said.

?Ideally we would like a new driver confirmed this side of Christmas; we?ll make our announcement as soon as we can.?

Richards has been linked to Team BOC, but Team Manager Kim Jones would not comment on whether this was true or not.

Holden Motorsport Manager Simon McNamara confirmed Holden was exploring a number of options for Richards.

?Jason is a fast driver and we want to see him progress,? he said.

McNamara wanted to ensure Richards stayed with Holden.

?At the end of the day I don?t want him to move to Ford and he doesn?t want to drive a Ford.

Maybe Uncle Tom likes a bit of kiwi a#*e, with Will going to HRT (Haggis Racing Team) ol'e Jason could end up at WP with Dumbrell. Uncle Tom is reported to be trying to buy a fourth license.

Come on Simon you can do better than that.
JR will be at the under achievers BOC/BJ
A major reshuffle would be good again.
Worked for Ford last year

Jason Richards might end up at PMM. It would be a step backwards for him to go to BJR, they could de tune a billy cart!
I read that BJR are buying two new cars for 2009 season. Which cars are they buying?

Apparently it was rather icey between him and Murphy.
It's probably why Murphy was rated the least wanted as your team mate by the drivers

Not to mention the fact he is a total TWAT!

Murphy has a bit of a habit of getting icey with his team mates that are a threat.
Rumour has it that while it was Kmart racing under Team tom and Rick was learning the ropes all was good.
When it became the Kellys team and Rick started beating him on a regular basis things soured.

This is on the V8 Supercars Website today

Christmas has come early for Jason Bargwanna, who has been signed up to replace Jason Richards in the #3 Sprint Gas Racing Commodore.

Richards started the ball rolling to what has been a whirlwind fortnight for the team when he announced before Oran Park that he did not intend to drive for Sprint Gas Racing in 2009.

The Kiwi driver, who finished second with Greg Murphy at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 this year, has been linked to Team BOC for next year.

Last night (Wednesday) Sprint Gas Racing confirmed that Bargwanna, 36, would partner Murph in 2009.

Bargwanna was lined up for his third year with WPS Racing this year, until the team withdrew just before the start of the season.

Left out in the cold with no other chance of a fulltime V8 drive, he went on to contest the Mini Challenge in 2008 and drove with Tony D?Alberto in the Bottle-O Commodore at the two endurance races.

But following Richards? departure, Bargwanna secured the Sprint Gas Racing drive based on his proven speed and experience.

The potential pairing of two Bathurst winners for the 2009 enduros counted heavily in his favour as did Bargwanna?s affinity with sponsors and his rapport with the media.

?2008 has been a frustrating year, to have an opportunity to race V8s again in 2009 is sensational and not (to be) taken for granted,? Bargwanna said.

?I never doubted that I would be back in a fulltime seat; I?m a survivor in this sport and there are many years of V8s left in me.

?To say that I am excited about 2009 is an understatement; I am motivated more than ever and confident that the team will be a force in 2009.?

Bargwanna believes the Bathurst result proved what the Sprint Gas cars are capable of and said the Clipsal 500 cannot come soon enough.

Sprint Gas Racing Manager Jeff Grech has known Bargs since he was with Holden Young Lions in 1997.

?Bargs has a wealth of experience,? Grech said.

?His engineering understanding and feedback is exceptional; he is a significant addition to the team.

?He?s a former Bathurst winner and an obvious choice for the vacant seat in car #3 in 2009.?

I could say it'll be great to see Bargs back , but since it's a holden team, . . . I'm totally underwhelmed.

At least bargs sounds happy

Bargs has only gone back to where he started from, the stinky holden side.
I must say though he has to be one of the only holden drivers i like.

Thats because he's not really a threat, he has always been an "also ran" really, but has ran pretty good races at times, without making too many mistakes that have resulted in spoiling someone nearer to the front's race.
