Hey guys:
What was the best race DJR competed in :

Here is what I think:

A tie between Calder 1985 and Lakeside 1985.

Both races in a underpowered Stang.
Calder was the third best touring car race ever.
(What do you think are the best 2?)
With plenty of nudges and passing,it was full of action.

Lakeside. Well I think this was a fantastic race. Head to head with Jim, 10 tenths all the way.
What do you guys think ?

Mate, I would say lakeside 1987 - the Sierra was wound up like a spring and to be trackside and see him blast past others at a whim was an absolute treat. The fact he did not finish meant little to us as Dick was back, and very quick as well.

What about Lakeside 1988 or 1989. The year he jumped the start and only lost to Bondy by less than 30 seconds.
That was flat out all the way.

For me it would have to be Bathurst 1994.

Dick was never expected to be a front running car after the top 10 shot out. With the race starting in the rain Dick & JB were able to fight their way through the field for a memorable victory.

Cheers.

Dick's best drive was Lakeside 81 fighting it out with Brocky with a broken front sway bar to win the ATCC[8D].His second best drive was Bathurst 94,Dick clipped the wall in the shootout finished up in tenth spot.It was raining at the start and they were as far back as 15th.Dick was the fastest man on the track through out the middle of the race, and put the car into a position where they could win the race.

Definately 88 JC. And I think it was Longhurst in the Freeport Sierra that won that race after DJ got the 60 sec penalty for a jump start, meaning Dick had to basically lap the whole field to win, which he did with the expetion of Longhurst to finish 2nd. But it was one hell of a drive.
Bond won Lakeside in 1990.

I think one of Dicks best drives was 1992 Bathurst. Over 600HP of Turbocharged Ford Sierra in pouring rain chasing down them 4WD Nissan GTR's. I still think they were robbed.

Thaks Rob.

You are indeed right.
But I stll vote Calder 85. Get it on tape and watch it.
It's worth the watch just to hear Mike Raymond.

JC: I agree, even better to see Robbie Francevic slapped about from all directions with bits of Swedish valiant going every which way(ps: have you a copy of that race on VHS?)

where can i get a copy (of older ATCC rounds) on vhs??, preferably in qld, preferably free (i dont mind if i can only watch it once, i just wanna see some older races, that and the fact i have no money lol)

the best race i can remember was bathurst 1994, but i was really really young then, and i cant remember much, infact thats pretty much the only race i remember before about 1996.

Doug.
I do have a copy of the Calder 85 round, but its now in poor condition and in a storage shead (Blame the wife and Kids for that)
When I get Annual Leave in May I Plan to copy all the old Races that I can onto DVD.
(Budjet and time permiting)
Keeping in mind Federal Copywritng laws I have no problems "Leanding them for private use"

I do hear a rumour that Chevron may be re-realsing the 7 broardcasts of the ATCC on DVD mid year.

I agree about Bathurst 92. Its the hardest one to watch again (knowing how it ends) but it was a hell of a race. The poor little Sierra pushing the GT-R for all it was worth. By the way, at one of the ATCC rounds me & my brother went on the simulator on the hydraulics with the screen in front, you know what I mean, and it was the racecam on lap 2 of Bathurst 92 when the GT-R gets past. Dick was ringing the neck of the Sierra. Its was the best ride of my life!

Bathurst 92 to be the first finishing car in that weather when others couldn't even keep awd on the track was awesome & I'll never forget standing under the podium that year screaming for DJ & JB & at Sheep shagger & Snoz

I think Lakeside 1994 was a fantastic race and full of action;

Heat 1: Brock and Longhurst colliding just after the start, Seto moving over to enter the pits and taking out JB, Mezera clipping a crippled JB and riding the fence, and DJ winning the heat after a fantastic early battle with Seto.

Heat 2: DJ getting a shocking start but quickly passing Richo and Skaife to move to second. Neil Schembri then blowing his engine on the final turn coming onto the front straight and half the field firing off into the grass or fence.

Unfortunately for Dick he hit the fence and was out of business. A potential round win gone begging! LP, instead, took the prize.

Action-a-plenty at that round!

I wasn't the only one thats for sure. We were that pissed off that Dick had been ripped off but then we thought nah lets hang around & let them know what we think. The funny thing was we couldn't even hear Richo call us arseholes cause we were booing so loud:D

I don't think anyone drove Lakeside Raceway better than Dick Johnson, he could race round there with his eyes shut I reckon!!
